The
advancement in technology leads to advanced manufacturing processes, products
and projects. The complexity of advanced technology has to be handled professionally
in order to take full advantage of the technology. There have to be dependable
control systems to ensure the there is no loss to life and property. The possibility
of incurring liabilities like public liability etc. due to hazards in the plant
and processes should also be minimized. To achieve these objectives, safety audits
and occupational safety and health (OSH) audit are steps in right direction.
Safety Audit is a very elaborate audit of the premises where all the aspects of
safety are audited threadbare. In this audit, complete OR selected premises, as
per the mandate, are inspected. Safety related documents are also reviewed. Extensive
discussions with the related personnel are held on various audit issues. All the
processes, warehouses, utilities and related areas are audited. If the scope permits
issues like:
An exclusive OSH audit covers a study to ensure compliance with
1S14489/OSHA 3132 standards/norms. OSHA is an internationally
recognized standard that acts as a guideline to achieve the objective
of having safe working environments and process safety management.
In an OSH audit, exhaustive evaluation of safety and health
hazards is undertaken. Sources of these hazards are identified and recommendation
made to reduce the occurance of hazards. Suggestions are also provided to mitigate
adverse consequences of hazards. The OHSA study includes review of the safety
system documentation. Reporting systems are also reviewed as part of the study.
If there is a requirement to study the processes as well, the safety audits and
OSHA study can be extended to a full fledged process safety audit.
